TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I have been involved with skating as a competitor, professional skater, writer, speaker, coach and choreographer for over 30 years.  As a competitive coach, I emphasize goal setting to help make dreams a reality.  I encourage excellent technique, using positive reinforcement to develop the jump, spin and edge skills necessary to become an accomplished skater.

I encourage my students to excel in their scholastic studies and currently have long-time students enrolled at MIT, UCLA, The Air Force Academy, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton and Adrian University.  Many of my students continue to participate in skating at the collegiate level.

Coaching Rink: Orange County Ice Palace (Yorba Linda, CA)

I coach skaters of all levels and ages, from ISI to USFSA levels.  I teach jumps, spins, foot work, and choreography. I tend to specialize in jump technique at the rink I teach at with many of the kids there.  I have strong technique that I teach and have been taught from by my coaches who are World and Olympic coaches. I also do a lot of choreography for skaters in the So. Cal area, but have done choreography outside of California, such as for the Chinese Taipei skater Sebra Yen (Senior Man).  I am also a current competitor in USFSA, ranked 11th in the United States at the Junior Mens level in January of 2010 (Short program 10th, Long program 10th- combined overall score 11th).

ISU & USFSA Rule Changes/Technical Notifications:

COACHES RESGISTRATION INFORCEMENT:

The Coaches Registration rule requirements, MR 5.09 and MR 5.10, were enacted by the Governing Council as a measure of safety and protection for all skaters. Coaches must be up to date on these rule requirements to be allowed to coach skaters at U.S. Figure Skating-sanctioned events. The background check requirement is a key step in this process.

As a U.S. Figure Skating club, it is your responsibility to verify that only coaches who are registered as being compliant for the 2010-11 season are allowed to participate in the U.S. Figure Skating-sanctioned event(s) your club is hosting. When a club does not enforce the Coaches Registration rule requirements, it is placing itself and the event at risk for potential liability should any claim arise involving a non-compliant coach.

For more information on Coaches Requirements for the 2010-11 season, follow this link:

http://www.usfigureskating.org/content.asp?menu=coaches.

Rules are only effective and serve their intended purpose if they are enforced. Please make every reasonable effort to ensure that the coaches who participate in all upcoming sanctioned test sessions and competitions hosted by your club are compliant with the Coaches Registration rule requirements.

We appreciate your help and dedication to the safety of our skaters. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Susi Wehrli, Senior Director of Membership

RE: Singles Skating – Spiral Sequence – Novice Ladies Short Program

In the Novice Ladies Short Program, a minimum of two (2) spirals with at least one change of foot is required. Spirals on both the left and right foot must be executed. The skater must have at least one 3 second spiral on each foot to achieve at least a Level 1. Only the first 3 attempted spirals will count for leveled features. Additional features for higher levels may be achieved and added to the level based upon the successful completion of the two required spirals. An unsupported spiral is required to receive above a Level 1.

ARC FORWARD is a new concept meant to serve as helpful hints, reminders and questions that might easily be ‘back-burnered’ in the day-to-day efforts of everyone involved with the great sport of Skating. We plan to include questions for all disciplines as they arise….actually before they arise, in order for everyone to be able to anticipate and deal with them more successfully.

Based on the idea that very few of us remember everything all the time, you may have tips to share as well. If you do, please send them to either me, David DeCaprio, oscstmblt.ddecaprio@gci.net or Marylill Elbe, LBSK8@aol.com .

There are only 2 requirements. One is that it is in the form of a question the other is that it should be at least 3 months before its occurrence date.

An example might be: If your facility signs its Fall user group contracts in June and you want to expand your Fall 2010 program, when is the right time to submit your request? How detailed is it expected to be? In order to provide ice time for a special event like a Workshop or Seminar or even a new competition, one must be thinking far ahead and on managements timetable.
